The Game Changer

As my dear friends know only too well, I’m not really a dress/skirt person. I’m totally that girl who shows up to weddings or engagement parties wearing a blouse, heels and dress pants rather than put on a skirt like every one else. In fact, I can count the number of times I’ve donned one in the last year on one hand (not including mandatory work dress code, of course).Quite a sad stat, but that’s likely to change since I picked up this bad boy. Super soft jersey, just-right midi length, and a grey that doesn’t totally look like sweatshirt material. If this is the other side of pants, consider me officially on board.

The Calm Before the Storm

J.Crew sweater, button up, pixie pants; H&M necklace, clutch; Zara trench; Call it Spring booties; Nixon watch

After an unseasonably dry (albeit foggy) October, November started out exactly as expected with copious amounts of rain. A little taste of the winter weather to come. I managed to sneak in one more photoshoot with those beautiful fall leaves- I just can’t get over the colours around this time of year.

Happy hump day!

The New Season

DSC_0919 - Copy

J.Crew cashmere, pixie pants; Zara leather jacket; Nixon watch; gifted toque & scarf

Fall has officially arrived in Vancouver and I could not be more excited. Layers, crisp mornings, and pumpkin-flavored everything are just a few things that make this season my favourite. Busting out a toque, scarf and leather jacket seemed like the perfect way to usher in the change, and I can’t wait for more as the leaves continue to fall.

What’s your favourite season?

The Vintage Topper

Vintage cape; J.Crew sweater, pixie pant, necklace; Winners button up; Aldo boots; Miro watch

Like politics and religion, fur is one of those things that people feel very strongly about. Without making this too much of a debate, I’ll say straight out that I don’t see anything wrong with fur as long as (as with everything else) it’s done responsibly. It’s for this reason that I’ve casually been scouting vintage shops (rather than furrier stores) for the past couple of years for the perfect fur vest to accent my fall wardrobe. I finally found the perfect topper last week at Community Thrift & Vintage down in Gastown and couldn’t be happier. I love that it’s kind of a mix between a cape and stole; easy to throw on, but comes down on my shoulders to give more of a jacket vibe. And pockets! Always love pockets. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so posh.

As my friends know only too well, I have an unapologetic love of all things J.Crew. From the lookbook styling to the clothes, to Ms. Lyons herself, I’m a serious fangirl for the brand. This video did nothing but further my love affair; I am now convinced that I need to monogram everything in my possession.  Aside from the suit I had tailored in Vietnam, my wardrobe is completely initial-free. Probably time to change that.

The Interview

DSC_0241 - Copy

Gap button down, crewneck sweater; Nixon watch; H&M floral trousers, necklace, envelope clutch; J.Crew scarf; Zara trench coat; custom loafers; Vancouver Olympics padfolio notebook

Ah, the interview; a phrase sure to strike fear into every young adult, new grad, and unemployed individual. I too used to cringe at the thought of them, but after four years of extensive prep and practice (thanks Peter B!) I’m now confident, cool, and collected when posed with a flurry of self-awareness questions. (“My greatest weakness is that I’m a perfectionist!” Yeah… Don’t say that.) My favorite part of interview prep is always the outfit planning and I thought it might be fun to share my thought process for picking out the above ensemble for a recent meeting at J.Crew.

As I was applying for a job in a creative industry I decided to punch up a classic button-down/crewneck look with some bold prints. With the floral trousers as my focus, I chose a subtle grey checked shirt and a polka-dot scarf to mix with the more basic trench and sweater, and went with polished flats and a simple clutch to round out my look. I also went with a simple watch and a bright necklace to break up the grey on grey and tie in with the colourful floral print. The most important thing for interview dressing is to wear something that is reflective of the position and company, but also showcases a bit of your personal style. My goal here was to show my bright personality and affinity for menswear-details, while still staying true to the branding of J.Crew.

What do you think? Did I hit it on the mark?

PS. Happy Friday!

Busy Bee, Sunny Sunshine

Over the last couple of weeks my life has gone into overdrive. Between finishing up my first semester of school and working weekends, I managed to assist with styling an 8-page shoot for The Province with Alicia, started interning twice a week at the amazing Roden Gray in Gastown, and took the first real step towards learning French by finally purchasing  Rosetta Stone (thanks, Group On!). My apartment has never been cleaner and I even got around to hanging the mirror and cork board that have been sitting in my room for three months. It’s been awesome.

However, as busy as I’ve felt lately I know that it’s only going to get more hectic. I applied to J.Crew yesterday for a part time position and my next semester starts April 8th. If all goes to plan, I may soon find myself with five classes, two internships, and two jobs, not to mention all the other stuff that takes up my time like blogging, gyming, and apartment curating. AND summer is coming! (Much less ominous than what those darn Starks say.) The clear skies as of late have definitely buoyed my spirits, but they also make it difficult to stay focused and indoors (blasted studying). It’ll be a pedal to the metal for sure, but I’m looking forward to every second. Anything is possible when the sun is shining!
